Facility Short Description:      
      BR1 is the first Belgian reactor. It was critical for the first time on 11 May 11 1956. A critical reactor is a reactor in which an itself maintaining chain reaction occurs. The critical state is a normal state of activity of an operational reactor. BR1 is an air-cooled reactor with graphite as moderator. It is a flexible instrument for fundamental research and training.
        
Main Technical Characteristics:      
      Reactor works on request of the experimenters, for at most 8 hours a day, at a maximum power of 700 kW (short periods up to 1 MW are also possible)
